María José Romero studied Visual Arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Boston University between 1989 and 1992. Since the 1990s, she has developed a painting-based practice, complemented by studies in art history, encaustic techniques, photography, and workshops with artists such as Yvonne Venegas, Carlos Alcázar, and Jodie King. Her work explores themes such as identity, the human psyche, and the mechanisms of the universe through disciplines like mythology, physics, and biology. Her pictorial process is physical and intuitive, close to action painting, and revolves around the archetypal form of the seed.
She has held solo exhibitions at the Museum of the City of Querétaro, Galería Páramo, Salón Silicón, the Mexican Cultural Institute in Spain, and Bushwick in New York. She has participated in group exhibitions in Mexico, Spain, and the United States, at venues such as the José Luis Cuevas Museum, the Museum of Art and History of Guanajuato, and the National Museum of Anthropology. In 2024, she was selected for the Urban Films Festival in Miami and has received awards such as the DNA Paris Design Awards 2022 in the landscape and public architecture categories.
